Employment and Support Allowance

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) for young people (16-24yrs) was abolished in Feb 2016. This allowed some young people with certain circumstances to satisfy the contributions criteria and access contribution based ESA.

Successful ESA claimants are placed in one of two groups - the Work Related Activity Group or the Support Group.

Contribution based ESA for people placed in the Work Related Activity Group will become limited to 365 days from 31st October 2016.

Claimants who have been receiving this allowance for 365 days before this date you will lose their entitlement to the benefit.

Claimants who are in the Support Group of ESA will not be affected by this change.

Claimants affected by this change will be contacted by the Department for Communities before this time to determine if they are eligible for income related ESA at a full or reduced rate.

Anyone affected by this change will have their benefits topped up for one year to help with the transition. This top up will be automatic and you do not have to apply.
