Katie and her baby son Zach were living in a damp flat with faulty central heating before they moved to a new Clanmil apartment.
Katie explains;
“My last flat wasn’t the place for a baby. I didn’t want to take Zach home to a place like that after he was born but I had no choice. I was on the housing waiting list for well over a year before I was offered my lovely new apartment but it was worth the wait. It couldn’t be more different. Clanmil’s project co-ordinator, is here every day to make sure that everything runs smoothly and I have the best neighbours ever. They all stop for a chat with Zach! We’re really settled here. It’s a lovely place to raise my son.”
Dorothy moved into one of Clanmil’s independent living schemes when her husband died twenty three years ago and really enjoys life at the scheme. She was attracted by the idea of more security and companionship and she particularly appreciates the support provided by scheme staff and the 24 hour Telecare system.
“Knowing that there’s always someone there, either our scheme co-ordinator, or Telecare at the other end of the pull cord really puts my mind at rest,” says Dorothy. “This was the best move I ever made. I just love my wee flat.”
Clanmil independent living scheme provides tenants with the support they need to stay in a home of their own as they grow older, offering independence, companionship, an active lifestyle and security in an easier-to-manage apartment.
George and his wife moved into one of Clanmil’s independent living schemes 20 years ago. Sadly George is now a widower, but at 90 years old he is one of the scheme’s most active residents, taking part in the many activities on offer.
One of George’s many interests is dancing and he has recently introduced Tea Dances at the scheme which are very popular with his neighbours.
According to George the best thing about living at the scheme is the friendship and the security. He says; “This was the best move we ever made. When we moved here we got involved with lots of new friends and joined in the excursions and shopping trips that were organised. I still love living here with all my friends and the staff are wonderful - very helpful and always cheerful. We really appreciate all they do to make our lives pleasant, especially the social activities. The ‘craic’ is always good.”
Iona has lived at a Clanmil independent living scheme for the past four years.
She had felt a bit isolated in her previous home and was delighted when a bungalow became available at a Clanmil scheme close to her daughter. But, as Iona is a wheelchair user, quite a few adaptations were needed to make the property suitable. Clanmil’s Scheme Co-ordinator, liaised with Iona’s Occupational Therapist and Clanmil installed aids and adaptations including a ramp for wheelchair access, an extension to the bathroom and kitchen to allow wheelchair movement, a wheelchair accessible shower and door widening throughout bungalow.
Iona’s family are delighted to have their mother living so close and have noticed a positive change in her. Iona herself couldn’t be happier. She says: “I’m really settled here. It’s a very friendly place. There’s always something going on and I love mixing with my neighbours at all the events and activities.”
